Recent Developments
Cybersecurity: The Internet provides easy ways to stay connected, informed and involved; however, those conveniences come with increased risk. FINRA and the SEC are warning consumers of “phishing” and other online identity theft scams. There are several ways to protect yourself from online identity theft, which include verifying your broker’s information on FINRA BrokerCheck or visiting the Anti-Phishing Working Group site for the latest news on phishing attacks. Morgan Stanley’s Technology & Information Risk team has joined forces with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to promote its national cybersecurity awareness campaign, entitled “Stop. Think. Connect.” The campaign focuses on being more vigilant about practicing safer online habits and how to maintain internet safety at home and in the workplace. To learn more, click here.
Safeguarding Seniors: Certain clients may be more susceptible to potential fraud or financial exploitation than others. There are resources from a myriad of channels to help you better understand the issues and challenges, and provide guidance on how to help you protect your assets. FINRA has a toll-free Securities Helpline for Seniors at 1-844-57-HELPS, as well as a topic page on their site. The helpline is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. eastern time. Seniors who have questions or concerns about their investment accounts can call to better understand their account statements, raise concerns or get information about investor tools. The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) has set up an initiative to provide resources to senior investors, family caregivers, the securities industry and policymakers. To learn more about this initiative, please click here. Morgan Stanley is dedicated to raising awareness about Senior financial abuse. To read more about our efforts, please visit our public site.
High-Yield CD Offers: There has been a recent uptick of High-Yield CD promotion offers. Some of these ads are promoting rates significantly higher than other bank products. As with any investment opportunity, always check BrokerCheck to see whether the person and the firm behind the offer are registered with FINRA. For more information, please look at the Investor Alert published by FINRA which can be accessed here.
